Can the same section behave differently for different classes?

Yes - and this is easy to miss. When a section is linked to a class, you can
override its settings for that class only. Open the section inside the class on the event
Itinerary page.
You can override, per class:
So one section can count for the Expert class but not for the Novice class, or start as Standing for one class and Open Rolling for another - without duplicating the track or the section.
Anything you do not override keeps the value set on the section itself, so you only need to change what is genuinely different for that class.
