Event itinerary: classes, sections (tracks) explained

Updated
There are many event configurations possible.

Definitions:
  • Event: The main race or competition with a specific date, location, and participants that contains all components: Classes, Sections, and Tracks.
  • Itinerary: The schedule and structure of the Event, showing Classes and Sections with a starting dates and times.
  • Class: A Class is a group of participants competing under the same rules or criteria (e.g., motorcycles, cars, SSV, trucks, bicycles, beginner level, expert level, enduro, adventure, T1, etc).
Each Class can have different Sections, and competition settings.
  • Section: A Section is a specific part of the Event where competitors are timed or measured. It’s based on a Track and has a starting date and time.
Sections use Tracks as their base, and multiple Sections can share the same Track file.
Section synonymous terms: "timed section", "selective section", "special stage", "special section" or "selective stage".
  • Track: A Track is the path or route participants will follow. It could be a roadbook or a GPX trail.
Track can start with a liaison or DSS (start) and end with an ASS (finish), possibly followed with another liaison.

Relationships Between Objects

  • Event: The main container for the entire competition.
    • Classes: Groups of participants competing under specific rules.
      • Each Class is linked to specific Sections.
    • Sections: Timed or measured segments of the event.
      • Sections are built using Tracks.
    • Tracks: The route for Sections. Can be a GPX file or Roadbook.

You can set up the event configuration however you want:
You can have a single section or multiple sections. You can use the same track for one section or for multiple sections.

If you want competitors to ride the same track twice (like SS1 and SS2), create two sections with the same track - this lets you set different start times for each.

If you have one track shared between two classes, just create one section with that track and assign it to both classes.

Competitors of the event will get access to sections in their class on the corresponding dates and times set by the organizer.

Example 1: Mixed Class Event Setup

“Mixed Class” = One Class, Two Tracks: GPX + Roadbook
Think of an event like a playlist. Each section is a track on that playlist. A class just defines who listens to which tracks.
In other words: "We’re just assigning two different routes (GPX + Roadbook) to one group of riders (class). The RBR app guides them through each one in order."

So, for a “Mixed” class:
  1. Create two tracks:
    • The first is a GPX trail (easy to follow like Google Maps).
    • The second is a short Roadbook (like a basic navigation puzzle - fun intro).
  2. Link each route to its own section:
    • Section 1: GPX
    • Section 2: Roadbook
  3. Create a rider class (call it “Mixed” or “Trail+Roadbook”) and say:
    • “This class rides both Section 1 and Section 2.” (by linking the two sections to the same class)
The system will then:
  • Unlock the GPX section first
  • Then unlock the Roadbook section after
The rider doesn’t need to do anything special - just follow what’s shown in the RBR app for each section.

Example 2: Rally Event Setup

  • Tracks:
    • Track 1: Roadbook "Mountain Trail" (50 km)
    • Track 2: GPX File "Desert Run" (80 km)
  • Sections:
    • Section 1: "Mountain Stage 1" (Uses Track 1 - Roadbook)
    • Section 2: "Mountain Stage 2" (Uses Track 1 - Roadbook again, but with a different starting time)
    • Section 3: "Desert Sprint" (Uses Track 2 - GPX)
  • Classes:
    • Class 1: Motorcycles
    • Class 2: Cars
  • Linking Sections to Classes:
    • Motorcycles (Class 1):
      • Section 1: "Mountain Stage 1" (Roadbook)
      • Section 3: "Desert Sprint" (GPX)
    • Cars (Class 2):
      • Section 2: "Mountain Stage 2" (Roadbook)
      • Section 3: "Desert Sprint" (GPX)
  • Result:
    • Track 1 (Roadbook): Used for "Mountain Stage 1" and "Mountain Stage 2" with different start times.
    • Track 2 (GPX): Used for "Desert Sprint" by both Classes.
    • Motorcycles (Class 1): Compete in "Mountain Stage 1" (Roadbook) and "Desert Sprint" (GPX).
    • Cars (Class 2): Compete in "Mountain Stage 2" (Roadbook) and "Desert Sprint" (GPX).
